Some sweet foods, morning foods and low-fat products contain high levels of salt even though they may not taste salty, according to an analysis of supermarket products by a consumer group.
Consumer Reports studied 37 brands available in the U.S.. Among the sodium saturated surprises uncovered by the analysis were Twizzlers black licorice (four strands have 200 milligrams of sodium), a Pepperidge Farm whole grain white bagel (440 milligrams of sodium) and Prego Heart Smart Traditional Italian Sauce (430 milligrams of sodium per half cup).
Some restaurant items contain whopping amounts of salt, which is used as a preservative and to enhance flavor and texture. Chili’s fajita chicken quesadilla with rice and black beans, sour cream and pico de gallo has 5,300 milligrams of salt.
The evaluation did find that nutritional labels are an accurate reflection of salt levels. In some cases, salt is added to low-fat foods to compensate for lack of flavor, and checking the label is the only way to know.
Many products perceived to be salty contain less salt than some low-fat foods, the testing found. For example, a quarter-cup of Planters mixed salted nuts contains 110 milligrams of sodium, less than half the sodium in seven Kraft Snackables cheddar and Monterey Jack reduced-fat cheese cubes, which have 270 milligrams of sodium.
Salt increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and related cardiovascular problems, and federal dietary guidelines recommend limiting salt intake to 2,300 milligrams a day. The average American consumes 2,900 to 4,300 milligrams of sodium a day.
Salt in food comes from ingredients other than typical salt, including monosodium glutamate, baking soda, sodium nitrate and other additives; only about 10 percent of the sodium individuals consume occurs naturally.
The American Medical Association has estimated that 150,000 lives could be saved each year if people in the U.S. lessened their sodium consumption in half, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer watchdog group, has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to regulate salt in foods.
According to the center, though some producers have lessened salt in their products in recent years, amounts have spiked in other products over the same time period. A serving of french fries at Hardee’s, the fast food chain, contains three times as much sodium as it did in 2005, according to C.S.P.I.
The sodium lowers in some places and increases in others “basically cancel each other out, said C.S.P.I. executive director Michael F. Jacobson. Salt levels may vary in a given product from brand to brand, but overall salt levels haven’t changed, he added.
The consumer-watchdog organization also conducted a taste test of lower-salt versions of products that are regularly high in sodium. The most popular ones were Dietz & Watson Gourmet Lite turkey breast (with the skin on), with 240 milligrams of sodium per two-ounce serving, and the Silver Palate Salad Splash Balsamic Country salad dressing, which has 15 milligrams of salt in 2 tablespoons.

It’s not just full-blown obesity that has been bungled by numerical hocus-pocus. 39 million Americans went to sleep one night in 1998 at a government-approved weight, and woke up “overweight” the next morning, thanks to a change in the government’s definition. That group includes presently “overweight” (BMI greater than or equal to 25) movie stars like Will Smith (6-2, 210 pounds, BMI of 27) and Pierce Brosnan (6-2, 211 pounds, BMI of 27). Michael Jordan (6-6, 216 pounds, BMI of 25) and Cal Ripken Jr. (6-4, 220 pounds, BMI of 27) were also “overweight” at the height of their athletic powers. And so is our ultra-fit President Bush (6-0, 194 pounds, BMI of 26). Moreover, the standard that we abandoned in 1998 had the virtue of distinguishing between men and women–something we now do not even attempt to do.
So what does Tom Cruise’s imaginary swordplay mishap have to do with obesity? Chalk it up to more bad statistics. The regularly recycled factoid that excess weight causes 300,000 deaths a year bizarrely assumes that if you die while overweight, you die because of that excess weight. As insane as it sounds, if Cruise were to kick the bucket for any reason, his death would count toward the mythical 300,000 total.
The respected New England Journal of Medicine knows this is bogus. It maintains that the 300,000 figure “is by no means well established. Not only is it derived from weak or incomplete data, but it is also called into question by the methodologic difficulties of determining which of the many factors contribute to premature death.”
Nevertheless, this statistic finds its way into nearly every discussion of obesity–as does the spurious claim that obesity costs Americans $117 billion per year. The source of this figure: a single study published by the journal Obesity Research in 1998.
This study had serious limitations, as the authors themselves admitted. They acknowledged that their methodology resulted in the “double-counting of costs” which “would inflate the cost estimate.” There’s also this stunning admission: “We are still uncertain about the actual amount of health utilization associated with overweight and obesity. Height and weight are not included in many of the primary data sources.”
But even if they had good data to work with and somehow controlled for the double (and even triple) counting of costs, these researchers still would have reached a unrealistic conclusion. Why? They used the wrong definition of obesity.
A BMI of 30 or more makes you obese, but the authors of this study for some reason decided to set the threshold at “BMI greater than or equal to 29.” Thus they erroneously included the economic cost of individuals with a BMI between 29 and 30. A small error? Not at all. That covers more than ten million Americans, including Bruce Willis (6-0, 211 pounds, BMI of 29), Brendan Fraser (6-3, 234 lbs, BMI of 29), and George Clooney (5-11, 211 pounds, BMI of 29).
$117 billion cost. 300,000 deaths. 61 percent fatties or obese. All wrong. Unfortunately, these bad statistics are the shaky ground on which a growing number of activist groups seek to build their nutritional utopias.

Government health officers have begun an investigation into the actions of the PCA or Peanut Corporation of America|Peanut Corporation of America, which they said they knew that they had delivered contaminated peanut butter and peanut products to major food makers.

On Monday, the company expanded its recall to include products made at its facility in Blakely, Ga., in 2007 and the first half of 2008; it had previously recalled all products made there from July onward.
The F.D.A. also said that in April it denied to accept a delivery of peanut products from the company to be brought back into the U.S. from Canada because it contained metal shavings. The company attempted to clean the shipment but failed, and the products were discarded in November, the agency said.
As a result of that predicament, the agency asked state inspectors in Georgia to visit the plant to make sure that no more metal shavings would get mixed in with the products.
The April incident involving the stopped delivery was apparently the first time the Food and Drug Administration was aware that the company was producing peanut items, instead of just peanut butter, at its Blakely plant.
Agency officers said that name-brand peanut butter had proved safe to eat, but that some boutique brands of peanut butter for instance, those made in small batches at stores could be suspect.
The peanut contamination has now struck 529 people and is associated with eight deaths. Cases are still being reported to federal health officials, although the number of new cases has decreased quite a bit, said Dr. Robert Tauxe of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Preteens participating in an unusual interactive research were more apt to suffer a virtual accident if they talked on the cell phone while they crossed a roadway, studies have shown.
Preteens are far from the best street-crossers to begin with, researchers said. But in the study, speaking on the cell phone increased the odds of being struck or almost run over by a virtual vehicle from 8.5 to 12 percent, a 43 percent spike in risk.
The research was published in the (Feb) issue of the journal Pediatrics. The research comes on the heels of several others that have shown that speaking on the telephone takes a toll on the concentration and visual processing skills of drivers, and may enhance the risk of an automobile accident quadruple.
Crossing the street is very difficult, if you stop and think about it,” said an associate professor of psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Young teens aren’t capable of doing it as well, he said, when speaking on the telephone.
Dr. Schwebel and his colleagues put 77 preteens in a virtual reality environment that emulated an intersection, standing across the busy street from a school with trucks and cars passing by in both directions. Those doing the study asked the 10- and 11-year-olds to figure out when it would be best to cross. The kids stepped off a platform approximately the height of a sidewalk curb when they thought it was fine.
Each child did a dozen simulated road crossings, half while speaking on the telephone. About half of the children were conversing during their first six crossings, while the other half received calls during the second six crossings.
Although performance got better with time and practice, the psychologists noticed, the cell phone calls distracted the children, making them less attentive to traffic. While on the phone, they were more apt to hesitate before stepping off the virtual curb and didn’t give themselves enough time before another vehicle drove by, leading to more close calls and more accidents.
The computer world did not impersonate life in one crucial way: it did not allow for children to speed up the pace and run across the busy road, nor could a car slow down or swerve to avoid an accident, Dr. Schwebel said.
On the other hand, using a cell phone wasn’t new to any of the children, Dr. Schwebel noted. All of them had used the cell phone before.
